“‘Everyone says Hufflepuff are a lot o’ duffers…'”Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, pg. 80
That was the second thing we hear about Hufflepuffs in the entire Harry Potter series- that they’re “duffers”. The first thing we hear is “…imagine being in Hufflepuff, I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?”(Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, pg. 77). That’s the way Hufflepuffs are introduced to Harry and the rest of us. It’s a surprise Harry doesn’t think the worst of Hufflepuff. Unlike him, however, there are people that do and those people insult all Hufflepuffs, including all the fictional characters and the house itself. My own friends (a Griffindor and a Slytherin) teased me when they learned my House. This post is for those people that just don’t understand Hufflepuffs or their values (I’m looking at you two that I call my friends). So I am going to defend my house right here, right now.
Hufflepuff House was founded by Helga Hufflepuff in 990 A.D. The House values kindness, loyalty, determination, and hard work. All good traits, if you ask me. It’s animal is a badger and it’s colors are yellow and black. It has produced the least Dark wizards of any House. Hufflepuff’s ghost is the Fat Friar, who is known to be the friendliest ghost (sorry, Casper). Why does everyone want to be in a different House? I think it is because of what Hagrid said: “Everyone says Hufflepuff are a lot o’ duffers…” Hagrid said this in 1991, and it tells us in that quote that the opinion of Hufflepuff was that they were “duffers”. It’s not 1991 any more. It’s 2017. That was 26 years ago. If you haven’t been convinced that Hufflepuff is a good House yet, here is a list of notable Hufflepuffs:
- Grogan Stump, past Minister of Magic
- Artemesia Lufkin, past Minister of Magic
- Dugald McPhail, past Minister of Magic
- Hengist of Woodcroft, founder of Hogsmeade
- Newt Scamander, author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
- Cedric Diggory, the sweetest person ever
- Nymphadora Tonks (yes, Tonks)
- Teddy Lupin (Tonks and Lupin’s son)
- Professor Sprout
Those are just a few notable greats but there are many more. This impressive list includes three Ministers of Magic, the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the founder of Hogsmeade? Seriously, that is a pretty good list! J.K. Rowling made a video about how good Hufflepuffs are (click here to watch it). If you’re still not convinced, then you are a Muggle that doesn’t understand even the simplest of things. 🙂 I’m going to leave it here.
