Helga Hufflepuff was the founder of Hufflepuff House and known to be the jolliest founder. Her exact date of birth is unknown, but it is assumed to be around the early Middle Ages. She helped found Hogwarts along with Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin shortly before the eleventh century.
Hufflepuff was the founder willing to accept any student into her house. While the other founders looked for a few specific qualities in a person, Hufflepuff simply took whoever was just, loyal and hard-working– values that no other founder really took in to account when choosing students.
Known to be particularly talented in Charms, Hufflepuff used her skills to help create the wonderful feasts held at Hogwarts every year. She also created many of the recipes still used at Hogwarts today and her portrait in the Hufflepuff common room is known to toast her students with her infamous golden cup.
The cup noted above is the only known artifact related to Hufflepuff. It is gold with an engraving of a badger on the front and was passed down through Hufflepuff’s many descendants. Of course, Tom Riddle eventually stole it from Hepzibah Smith and turned it into a Horcrux, placing it in the Lestranges’ Gringotts vault. It was rescued and then destroyed in 1998 by Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
Helga Hufflepuff was a witch with many unique views on the world who left a wonderful legacy behind her. She will forever be remembered as one of the greatest witches of her time.
