The founder of the House of the Brave, Godric Gryffindor, was born in what is now known as Godric’s Hollow in England. He founded Hogwarts in 990 A. D. along with Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin. The House named after him (Gryffindor) chooses it’s students based on their courage, perseverance and “strength of heart”. Gryffindor was also the founder most in favor of allowing Muggleborns into the school.
Known as the best duelist of his time, Gryffindor showed his bravery time and time again. He dueled Muggles with his sword and wizards with his wand. He even threatened Ragnuk the First, the maker of his sword.
Ever wonder how the Sorting Hat came about? Well, one day the founders were trying to figure out how to sort the students into the Houses when Gryffindor took off his hat and they enchanted it to sort the students long after their deaths. The hat was given the title of Sorting Hat and is still used to sort the students today.
The only artifact known to this day to belong to Gryffindor other than the Sorting Hat is Gryffindor’s sword. The sword can be summoned by a “true” Gryffindor using the Sorting Hat. The sword’s location was unknown until it was summoned in 1993 by Harry Potter in the Chamber of Secrets. It was used to destroy four of Voldemort’s Horcruxes and was last used on May 2, 1998 to kill Nagini, Voldemort’s snake.
Gryffindor’s date of death is unknown, but it was sometime during the middle ages. He lived a long life and though he is no longer here, he will live on through his portrait and each new generation of Gryffindors to pass through the school he helped found.
